686 Men's Original Snow Tool Belt Review

This is my second 686 toolbelt. I bought a black one and now this brown one. Honestly I got it because it had the bottle opener, though the other tools are cool and work great. All of the tools come off of the belt and can actually be used.

I have a 34" waist and the L is perfect. I'm on the middle of 5 holes.

This is the size chart I can find on some retailers sites [S/M (26-34) and L/XL (32-40)] but the page here has 3 sizes.

I've bought 3 of these belts and they've all been well-used. I like the first one so much that I had a new black leather belt custom cut to go with the original buckle hardware.

The toolbelt has a utilitarian design which says, "I'm always prepared". While 686 designed this belt for snowboarders, to adjust their bindings out on the slopes, the tools they included are great for many hobbies. The Phillips #2 driver works perfectly for most screws in a computer, and the wrenches seem appropriate for a bike enthusiast.

The width of the belt completely fills my belt-loops on my jeans, which is ideal. Most belts leave some room to spare, which doesn't look quite as nice.

PRO:

*Tools: Flathead and Phillips #2 screwdrivers, Wrenches, Bottle Opener

*Tools are pretty durable.

*Great utilitarian look. Fills belt-loops on jeans or snowpants completely.

*Cool discussion piece.

CON:

*Leather stain _will_ bleed when wet. The belt is advertised as being waterproof, intended for wintersports, so this is a design flaw. Also, the stain is only surface-deep, so if you clip accessories (cellphone, ID, keys, radio, waterbottle) to your belt, it will develop scratches that reveal the leather color below the stain.

*Leather hardens when wet, true of all leather goods. The 686 Toolbelt is no exception. However, because the belt is advertised as being weatherproof, I had expected better performance. This is not the case. Should your Toolbelt become wet, the leather will stiffen a bit. You'll need to apply some leather moisturizer to return it to softness.

*Hardware finish is prone to scratching. The buckle hardware and tools are either nickle-plated or painted black. After you use them a bit, the finish will wear, exposing the metal core. While this is normal for a belt-buckle, plating or painting real tools is much less common. The nickle finish and brass/bronze core both will tarnish when exposed to sweat. Metal cleaners (acetone, kerosene, Hoppes #9, BreakFree CLP, MEK) will remove this tarnish. Clear-coat it to prevent tarnishing.

Despite those criticisms, I still highly recommend this belt.

This belt was neat at first, but its one feature I used consistently—the bottle opener—started to wear down and get rounded off quite quickly, and is now barely usable. I guess it's nice to have screwdrivers if you need them, but I usually have a Leatherman around for that.

I bought this belt not sure if I'd ever actually use it as anything more than something to hold my pants up, but after one of my bindings coming loose on a snowboarding trip last winter, I can say that this belt is as functional at tightening loose fasteners as it is at holding one's pants around their waist.

The leg cooler works well as a combination sunblock and leg warmer/cooler but I've found it only works well as a "cooler" if you are going above 15 mph and it's not humid. Dry sunny days are the ideal conditions. It is a bit tight around the knee for me.

I contrast Lite-Ning 4 Running Shoe and ASICS Men's Hypersprint 5 Running Shoe. Because someone may wonder which one to buy from Asics.

Wegiht: Almost same

Number of spikes: Lite-Ning 4 has six spikes, Hypersprint 5 has five spikes

Shape of soles: Lite-Ning 4 has narrower soles (which is good for sprinting)

Size: I bought the sizes of 9.5 for both. I feel Lite-Ning is slightly bigger in the length, not the width. Lite-Ning fits to my feet with thin socks, and Hypersprint 5 fits to my feet with bare feet.

I think Lite-Ning 4 is good for the intermediate level of printers for 100m, 200m and 110mH hurdles. Because I don't run 400m, I am not sure about it. On the other hand, Hypersprint 5 is good for beginners because Hypersprint 5 give less burden to the legs because of the shape of the soles. Or, Hypersprint 5 is also good to wear for practice for any levels of sprinters.

I recently became interested in the Helly Hansen Tactel fabric polos after I started branching out from Under Armour. Over the past few years, I've started wearing more "sport" polos (meaning Polo shirts made form technical, wicking fabrics, rather than standard pique knit or jersey cotton), and I've always used ones from Under Armour. Unfortunately, the jersey knit fabrics tend to make my nipples look pointy (TMI, I know), so I started trying to find some pique knit alternatives. I ran across the Helly Hansen Riftline polos, and I fell in love.

These polo shirts (both the rift line and the kos) feel very lightweight and they breathe extremely well. I recently wore one of these shirts to a local theme park (imagine standing in the hot sun, no breeze, 90+ degree heat, for hours) and I stayed fairly cool and dry. The tactel fabric feels light and airy (almost like gauze), and seemed to breathe better than the tech jersey polos I've bought from UA. Its slightly stretchy, and I can't emphasize enough how comfortable these shirts are (regardless of temp). While the fabric technically is jersey knit, it has more texture to it and looks more like a pique polo shirt. The fit seems spot on; I usually wear a XXL in most polo shirts, and the Helly Hansen XXL fit me perfectly. I only wish they had more colors: I bought the cobalt blue, purple, and orange riftline polos when the were on sale for about $44 apiece. I bought the olive green Kos polo (which looks awesome), and if I could find my size, I'd buy the white one and the blue one, too. The Kos polo looks a little dressier than the Riftline polo.

In case you're not familiar with Helly Hansen, they're like the Scandinavian equivalent of North Face or Patagonia; they make a lot of sport and outdoor clothing that's mostly popular in Europe. I first ran across their coats at the Norway shopping area in Epcot center at Disneyword and I was impressed by their style and quality. I now have a Helly Hansen raincoat and I'm always eyeing their parkas.

Maybe it's me, but the old days of Carrera Sunglasses, when the frames and the glasses were substantial, seemed to be long gone. For some reason these glasses appeared a little flimsy, to much plastic?, and even though they claimed a 68mm eye, they were a little uncomfortable for me to wear. I do have a need for large glasses, and most brands sadly, do not make them all that large. The newer Carreras are so different from the solid ones I enjoyed in the past, so much in fact, that I had to switch my loyalty to newer brands, and also had to find a decent website where they actually give you all the measurements and explains each as well (eye, bridge, temple), so a buyer can make an informed decision. Most vendors just show the sunglasses and will not tell about the fit, and we all know there are different fits. One of the best (considered the best by a 2013 poll) sites to shop for right sizes is framesdirect.com, where they are so thorough that eventually one can learn and find exactly what they need. It is also very important to make sure that wherever one buys from that they are Authorized Dealers of the brand. There are just too many places out there, but not all are by the book, and if one wants the real deal is worth taking the time (by calling the manufacturer if applicable), to make sure one is buying the genuine brand.

Polarized glasses is also a consideration and they tend to cost a little more, but most individuals would benefit from a polarized pair, and of course 100 % UV Protection. This pair of Carrera CARERRA Ca5530S Aviator Sunglasses,Black,Blue Frame,Grey Multi Deg Lens,One Size, were returned. Bought a pair of Police (72mm eye) that looked nice and big, good for driving. Also a pair of Maui Jim Middles (72mm eye). The website framesdirect.com has a sister site right on their website, that caters to the military personnel (active, retired, veteran, spouse, etc.) and the prices are about 30 to 40% lower, so even if someone wants to buy and has no military affiliation I am sure they would know someone that is, and will save a lot of money for the genuine brands (afeyewear.com), this information does not take away from amazon being my favorite online store of all times, but saving real money is always a good thing, and being able to find a very decent pair of sunglasses without having to work too hard, even better. 3 Stars.

Ordered this kit from Amazon.com via US supplier.

Sizes were listed as small, medium, large, xl, xxl. As it was for 15 yr old, I ordered meduim. In the product description there was no mention that it was a Youths jersey, as it does now.

There was no mention that they might be VAT to pay on arrival, and a Royal Mail fee for handling such a payment. This added another £15 to bill.

When I opened the box, the size was nearer to a junior medium than an adult size. Kit was really smart, but WAY too small. If it had been right size, it would of been great value for money...until you add on the unexpected taxes.

In fairness to Amazon they were great, resolving the issue straight away and issuing a refund for all costs incurred. I have now ordered the proper size from a British supplier...fingers crossed this time.
