Bought these for alpine touring, specifically the 100 mile Haute Route traverse from Chamonix to Zermatt -they are fantastic!
Softshell fabric upper leg is much more abrasion resistant, breathable, and the cut fits better than Patagonia's comparable Backcountry Guide Pant. Side leg vents open all the way for maximum cooling when skinning uphill (Patagonia Backcountry Guide Pant with fabric mesh in the leg vents only opens 2 inches max, not cool). With side vents zipped up on the downhill, over a mid-weight base layer, the Trailbreakers completely cut the wind and keep your legs warm even in high winds, or when you're sweated up.
The 5 zippered pockets are terrific, easy to reach, just the right size, so they let you keep all your essentials (passport, snack bars, knife, cash, etc.) in the pants so they never get misplaced when constantly shedding or adding top layers as you heat up on the climb then chill on the descent. Knees and lower leg have a snowproof, waterproof breathable shell, and the removable internal gaiters fit perfectly over my AT ski boots. I'm 6'1", 160 lbs, 32" waist, 34" inseam, the Medium size fit was perfect over a power stretch base layer.
After living in these pants for nine days of continuous ski touring,from valley altitudes and temperatures to 12,500 ft., all snow and weather conditions, plus travel to/from the mountains -they did it all -a phenomenal AT pant from OR!

I bought these for a late-season alpine touring trip. Actually, I ordered several different pants, for comparison, but this was the pair I kept. They were great for the purpose. The ventilation zips were a life-saver. On warm days and tough climbs I pitied my companions who didn't have adequate vents. The light color was good for those very sunny days. The fit was pretty good. They were reasonably (but not completely) water-proof, and reasonably durable-though the cuffs are not completely impervious to sharp ski edge or crampon spikes. The cuffs did fit over my alpine ski boots, which was important to me.
I bought a pair of OR suspenders to go with these-highly recommend that addition.

I wore these skiing in the Dolomites last winter and for a few trips on the east coast nothing backor sidecountry, just alpine/downhill. I really like the reinforced scuff guards, the dual softshell/nylon materials, and the ability to open the side zippers to lose heat (really handy in the Dolomites when the sun came out). These pants are comfortable enough to wear trekking in the spring or fall in wet and/or otherwise undesirable conditions and I'll probably use them for some hiking in cooler weather. I'm 6'3" and usually look for a 34" inseam (OR offers one in their Ferrosi pant), and the Trailbeakers are probably 32", so I wouldn't mind if they were a little longer. They still just barely break over the top of my ski boots.

I purchased these pants this Winter and so far have 40 days of bc skiing on them in the Wasatch Mountains. I don't normally write reviews but Outdoor Research nailed it with these pants. These were definitely well thought out and had serious design input from backcountry skiers. What finally led me to write this review is the bomber material and construction. The first thing I noticed is that they do not stretch out and get all baggy during a tour like some other softshell pants. They fit true to size. They are warm enough for me down to the single digits without long underwear as long as I am moving. They are cool enough with the thigh vents open with temps into the 40's along with the lower leg cuffs turned inside out and pulled up to the knees to let the calves breathe on the ascent (I have the pewter color). They can take a beating on the up and down through thickets, bushes, rocks, etc. I have yet to tear them or break a zipper and they still look new. I have shredded other softshell and Gortex hardshell pants in the same conditions. The grommets at the bottom of the cuff are handy when having to switch over to bootpacking steep terrain in deep snow with multiple breakable crust layers...I tied a 1/8 inch bungee cord stirrup to them with cord locks to cinch down. The cuffs fit over my Dynafit TLT5 boots no problem. I have been comfortable in these pants in blower face shot powder to spring corn conditions...storm days to bluebird. Nice work Outdoor Research for making a solid product and thank you Amazon for carrying it!

I love these pants and expect to get a lot of use out of them. The ventilation zippers are ingenious. The flexible material is very comfortable. Lots of pockets. Can adjust the waistline easily. I have tried on many similar pants from other and same manufacturer and although I am a female, the men's pant fits me best. Love the ability to cinch down the pants cuffs which are a little long for me, but I don't need to hem now. Love everything about these. Wouldn't change a thing.
