. . . but this is the only one that measures the chain stretch correctly: by preloading the rollers. If you want to do it right, this is the tool to get. Shimano has always been more interested in function rather than form. The only con is this tool is expensive, but I must say it's a piece of stainless steel buffed to a mirror finish, so at least it looks like a work of art.

Well, although this is a bit pricey this chain wear indicator will give you a precise readinglike no other. Simple instructions on the package and even on the tool itself will give you a flawless reading time after time. I made the investment because I care that much about my bike, my chain, and my components! You won't regret it.

The web was filled with mixed reviews about all other brand & type of chain stretch indicators. All reviews I found on the TL-CN41 were good.

The TL-CN41 works well, like everything else Shimano

It's really expensive for a 8.5" chunk of metal though.

Honest reviews on Shimano TL-CN41 Chain Wear Indicator

Chains really don't 'stretch', but rather wear of the pins cause the pitch of the chain to increase. Wear of the rollers however, does not affect the pitch of the chain. Virtually every other tool on the market adds the wear of the rollers to the `stretch' measurement, but this one does not. It measures pin wear only. It's a simple `go/no go' gauge. If the lever bottoms out, the chain needs to be replaced, if not, keep it on the bike. So good I acually use a Shimano tool on my Campagnolo equipped bike :). For what it is worth, at the moment (June 2013) the price ($38 ish) is significatntly less that what this tool has been in the past ($50 plus), making it very competitive with tools that are not as accurate.

The wear is not the same on both sides of chain pins.I learned that this tool is the correct one to check the wear on the right side of the chain pins, If it passes measuring from right to left over the chain and not when inverting the tool to measure from left to right, consider inverting the chain to get some more mileage before changing it.
