I've worked in emergency services since 1977 as a firefighter and medic. As a knife collector, but more importantly a knife user I can tell you this is the perfect all around knife and tool for emergency workers. You can tell tihs knife was designed for firefighters by a firefighter. Finally a knife that can be easily opened one handed with the heaviest of structural fire gloces about time! And the locking mechanism is one of the safest and strongest(and safest) I've seen.

I have had one of the Hinderer rescue tools for over 8 years, and issued this tool to all the firefighters on my department about 7 years ago. As many have indicated, it does have a lot of utility for emergency workers specifically designed in. The tool is well constructed and quite sturdy.

There are a couple of things you may be interested in knowing. The point of the blade is blunted and dull, and I believe was intended to be used for prying, not for cutting or penetrating. This is quite unique compared to virtually all other folding knives and not what you may expect.

The cutting surface of the blade is, as others have commented, is quite sharp, but as indicated, it is deeply serrated and more useful for heavy cutting through rope, webbing or similar tough products than for fine work.

The hooked-cutter works well for cloth, small diameter line (string, fishing line, clothesline etc) and webbing, and can be sharpened with a rod-style ceramic sharpening tool. It will cut seat-belt webbing if you keep it sharp. Hooking the cutter under the belt with the hook out or up works best, and reduces that chances of hooking the skin of the person inside the belt.

The glass/window punch does work, but heavy gloves with gauntlets are a must as the heel of your hand is very exposed to the breaking glass. It also works for punching through lexan or acrylic sheet material.

The little tool bits and lever that are included seem hokey or silly at first glance, but if you are a long way from your tool box and time is an issue, they actually do work. They are not for regular use, nor are they as convenient as the bits on a multi-tool. They make the sheath a little bulky, and are not well secured in their little pocket, but they beat having nothing.

The sheath is fairly heavily constructed. The sheath with the tool and bit set included is pretty thick, and bulky to be worn in street clothes on a regular basis. Remember, the tool was designed to be worn by rescue personnel, probably specifically to be worn on fire turnouts, and also designed to be used wearing turnout gloves, so compactness and slim carrying design were sacrificed for utility.

All that said, I gave one of these to my son, who carries it daily in his street clothes using the belt clip. The clip is sturdy, stronger than the clips on most folding knives, and the tool by itself is fairly slim and easy to slip into a pocket. If you wear Popper or similar "Tactical Trousers" (as if trousers could actually be tactical) the tool should fit nicely in the knife pocket. It also fits well into the slit pockets on painters pants.

If you are looking for a convenient folding knife for opening packages and boxes, cleaning fingernails, slicing into plastic packing etc look elsewhere. If you want a sturdy, large tool for heavy cutting, light prying and heavy use, this is for you. Good tool for structural firefighters, EMS Techs etc.

I noticed this knife over the past year and have taken my time considering purchasing it. I'm in EMS and thought the knife would be too cumbersome to carry about. This fall, an outdoor store opened nearby and when I visited, I mentioned the knife. They went ahead and got one in so I could check it out. Which I did. I tested it by putting on two pair of gloves (from the store rack) and opened it rather easily with one hand. I then cut clothing with the seatbelt/clothes cutter. The O2 bottle wrench was a total sale for me. Countless times I am scrambling for the wrench attached to the bottle with a chain. I was rather impressed.

Well my most amazing wife didn't miss a trick. Shortly thereafter my birthday arrived -as did the knife.

So far I am really impressed. Sharp as hell, easy to open and close one handed, quality seems to be excellent, I was hoping the tip was blunt or dull which it is good for prying yet safe near a patient, the tip was perfect. As for the size, its just fine. Its got a great weight and feel about it and I easily carry it in my EMS pants cargo pocket. I don't bother with the holster, and mini tools I'll toss them in the glovebox, who knows.

The knife is pretty much as expected. I admit it is bigger than I realized but that isn't the knifes fault. As a police officer I need a dependable knife and this one will fit he bill.
