I have 2 pairs of theses shorts and absolutley love them. I also have the tactical light shorts by 5.11.

I actually had a very lengthy comparison review written with pictures to compair the two but my internet froze and it did not save. It was exasperating to write so I wont be doing it again. Just take my word of it they are better than the 5.11 shorts.

The seams are sewn pretty well. Shorts have this hidden elastic band in waist area. Thats a big plus because 5.11 chose to have a scrunchy elastic band on both sides of the hip and I dont like the scrunchy look. Small details like the pockets, they also have elastic bands in them and a additional pocket on the outside of the thigh pocket, the zipper is also larger, which is nice because it wont get stuck between the folds of your groin area when going #1. I hate digging for my zipper, makes others think your fooling around in the urinal. These shorts are also pretty thick, but in a good way. My other pair of shorts feel flimsy compared to the Blackhawk. I am probally missing some stuff but im doing this all off the top of my head. Anyways would I buy them again? Yes! If they made some in a dark blue maybe. The current blue they use is too blue for me.

Also something to note, their size 34 feels a little tighter than my other shorts. I know I gained some weight but all my other pants that are size 34, like the 5.11 or even my belt for that matter, feel looser. Maybe its the elastic band being stretched when I sit down. Thats when the pants feel tight, when my big gut hangs out when I am seated.

I have to say first off, I'm generally not impressed with shorts! If they look okay, fit okay, they're okay! But these shorts are clearly the most comfortable, nicest looking and probably the most functional shorts I've ever owned.

I normally wear size 33 waist, but the 32's fit me almost perfectly.

The gusseted crotch is a great feature. There seems to be plenty of "action" room in the fit, generally speaking, yet they still look nice. The silicone bead is a really nice feature, tho I wish it were a bit thicker. It not only helps to hold the shirt in, it helps to hold the shorts up, without having to use an additional belt.

The stretch waist is very clever in that it's almost imperceptible, but seems very well made and functional. Rear pockets are unique, and a nice style touch. Speaking of pockets, there are more than enough.

The fabric seems to be really tough, and even though it's slightly stiffer than normal, it's a non issue. Very functional DWR finish, and ripstop.

In short, I love these shorts! I've never said that about any other shorts, and likely never will!

First off I bought these shorts for bike patrol and theyre great. If you are trying to compare these with the 5.11 (I already own 2 pair of 5.11 but I needed a black pair) i'd suggest the Blackhawk and this is why.

1. A little thicker material

2. I'm not a fan of the elastic on the 5.11

3. Pocket design and layout is much better

4. The Blackhawk was a little less expensive.

5.11 makes a great product but now that i own both, I'll be buying Blackhawk from now on when it comes to shorts and pants.

Honest reviews on Blackhawk Men's Light Weight Tactical Short

I've had Tactical 5.11 and Propper shorts, and these beat them both. More--and more cleverly designed--pockets and highly durable 65/35 poly/cotton fabric extends to the pocket liners (no thin cotton to wear out). Two phone/magazine pockets rather than the usual one. Elastic waistband carefully hidden for clean look. Sticky band inside the waistline to keep your shirts tucked in. Double seat, overall wear 'em forever feel. They have the feel of Tilley shorts, at less than half the price. You won't be disappointed with these shorts.

These are the best shorts I have ever owned. To start off with I am 6'0 275. Now for us bigger guys we have only a few places to buy clothes and you pay a lot for garbage shorts. The price of these is about the same as a cargo short at Casual Male. But these far exceed any shorts I have ever had. They are lightweight yet durable. The zipper is big and feels like it will last. For the bigger guys who purchase pants and the top snugs the thigh when you move or squat you do not have to worry about that in these, they are very comfortable. Also I am a retired police officer. The pockets can fit three magazines on each side. It is big enough to carry extended ones with the cargo pocket closed. The pockets on the thigh front carry my evo 4g tightly but it will still close with the velcro streched. I would say waist size order what you normally wear and when you bend it has the stretchee in it to expand. And with prime and no tax I will order more.
