I have two little boys and they wear wool socks exclusively from the first chill of fall through the damp spring weather. One of my kids even insists on wearing his wool socks all summer, although the other one goes for shorter, less itchy cotton-blend sport socks when the weather is warm.
I have tried at least half a dozen big name brands for kids' wool socks. Most of our socks are SmartWool, which work fine for my gentler kid, but get worn completely through to holes in less than one season for my other child. I don't know WHAT he does to his socks, but he gets holes in them really quickly. Almost one year after purchase, his Darn Tough socks are still in very good condition. (We got the blue/orange color scheme.) You can tell they have been washed and worn, mostly because the top ribbing rolls a bit over time, but they do not have holes or visible wear.
I really love to get sale prices on high end products, which is how I always bought our SmartWool socks, but these are worth paying full price for since they actually last several times longer than every other brand we've tried.
For my child with gentler habits, I can happily buy any cute style of SmartWool, Lorpen, Icebreaker, etc... but I will stick to Darn Tough for everyday socks for my more rough-and-tumble kid.
