Got this jacket as a spring/summer shell to fight the wind and for warm nights around town. This is a true shell with no lining or insulation whatsoever.
At 5'8" 170 lbs, chest size 38, I got a size small with which I can fit a thin wool sweater underneath comfortably, but probably not a winter sweater. With a thin wool sweater and scarf, I felt decent on a windy beach, probably 50 60 degrees F.
Size up if you want to layer more underneath.
The hood is fitted without any drawstrings. There are 4 exterior pockets and one internal small, zippered pocket. Drawcord at the hem.
I would prefer the snap buttons to be darker instead of the chrome color, but that's OK.
The wax coating acts much like the water repellent spray that is found on modern softshells and rain jackets the water beads and rolls off the jacket, just like that. I know that the jacket is no way waterproof and doesn't claim to be, but I have not tested to what extent of water does the wax start failing.
I tried adding more wax onto the shell (rub the wax bar and then melt it with a hairdryers or iron) and what happens is that the wax dries and shows up as white "stains" on the shell where the wax coat is too heavy gives it a sort of rustic, gritty, possibly dirty look, which I don't mind, but probably looks better on certain color shells than others, just so you know. I would be VERY conservative when waxing your shell the first time. Wait for the wax to really dry and move towards the surface (a couple of hours) before adding more wax. It's very difficult to put down an even coat.
