I actually was just introduced to Horny Toad clothing last fall. There are actually quite a few companies now that produce this kind of clothing so its very easy to lose sight of some of them. In fact there are so many companies making clothes today that its impossible to keep up on all of them. With that being said Horny Toad is definitely a company that you want to keep an eye on as they have a really nice selection of urban/outdoors styled clothing. This kind of clothing is really my favorite style of clothing. Its stylish yet not trendy, sporty yet classy enough to wear for a night on the town and most importantly they use high quality materials. Horny Toad really reminds me of one of my favorite clothing companies, Kuhl, especially in regards to their full zip sweaters.
If you are unfamiliar with Horny Toad and Kuhl full zip sweaters then you simply don't know what your missing. These are honestly some of the highest quality sweaters I have ever seen. They are made with 100% Merino Wool which is IMO the single best fabric for making sweaters period. No other fabric, including cashmere, is better suited for sweaters as no other fabric can keep you as warm and at the same time offer the wicking properties that wool gives you. Some people don't like wool as they automatically think of the old school wool sweaters that felt like you were wearing sandpaper. They were insanely itchy and just plain uncomfortable to wear. The wool that is being used today is about as different from that old school wool as it can possibly get. First and most importantly its not itchy and is extremely soft. In fact, Merino wool is softer and more comfortable to wear than cotton. 2nd you can machine wash these sweaters unlike the old school sweaters that you had to hand wash or have dry cleaned. Last but not least the fibers themselves are woven very differently and do not snag like old school wool. Just do a little research into what fabric all of the big name mountaineering companies use for their top of the line base layers and any doubt that you might have had about wool should quickly fade away, after all, the base layer is the layer that comes in direct contact with your skin. Ill save you the time, they all use wool and this is because its extremely warm and at the same time very breathable. The bottom line is that this isn't your parents wool.
As for the Locke sweater, they are outstanding. They are just the perfect weight, not too thick and not too thin. They go with just about anything you can possible wear including Chino's, blue jeans, cargo's, etc. You can wear just about anything under them as well including t-shirts, button downs, etc. They really are just the perfect all around sweater. As I said before they are sporty yet classy enough to wear even if your going somewhere with a somewhat higher dress code. I personally love to wear mine with J Crews Broken in Chino's, its just a great outfit and I always get at least a couple compliments. Its just a clean, sporty and classy sweater.
The bottom line Horny Toad sweaters are some of the best sweaters being made today and they easily stand toe to toe with sweaters from Kuhl, Ibex, and Smart Wool. If your looking for a wool sweater that you can wear pretty much anywhere and with pretty much anything then you simply cant go wrong with Horny Toad.
