AN INITIAL NOTE ABOUT THE COLOR

After looking at the pictures, I ordered "gravel", expecting it to be dark grey. It is actually more of a dark olive drab with the dark green tones more apparent in daylight.

STANDARD SHORTS VS. CARGO SHORTS

OK, I get a "duh!" on this one, but just a heads up: the Silver Ridge shorts are different than the Silver Ridge Cargo shorts.

A few weeks prior to this purchase, I ordered some Silver Ridge Cargo shorts through Amazon. I really liked them and decided to order a second pair in a different color with a shorter inseam. I searched for "Columbia Silver Ridge" found the color and inseam I wanted, and ordered.

When it arrived, I discovered it was not the same model that I had previously ordered. After a little digging, I discovered there are 2 different variations of the Silver Ridge short: a standard version (this one); and a Cargo version (the pair I previously ordered).

Just to note the differences:

As you might expect, the cargo version has one more pocket this one is a velcro-closed pocket on the side of the right thigh.

Both versions have a zippered pocket on the side of the left thigh, but whereas the cargo shorts pocket has the zipper across the top, the standard shorts have a vertical zipper running the height of the pocket.

The rear pockets are the same both with velcro closures.

So anyway, the names of the different variations are clearly spelled out on Amazon and this is totally my mistake. But hopefully this helps clarify things so that someone doesn't make the same mistake as I.

Slim fitting, light weight and seem to be very good quality. Belt is not built in so you can remove it and thread a fanny pack through the large belt loops. Color was accurate (peatmoss)and waist size were accurate as well.

I bought a second pair. I do like them I walk a lot I don't know if my skin is sensitive or my body unstandard but I've had trouble with other shorts, including some from Columbia, rubbing against my legs in an odd way when I walk and causing a lot of discomfort. These use a very thin, lightweight, friction-free yet strong fabric which works out great on a 2 or 3 hour walk, or for riding a bike.

I do wish Columbia finished the button better it's metal and rubs against my skin. Seems like it will wear out the fabric early as well. A better design would have that covered with fabric on the inside or just sew on a standard button. (Yes, buttons fall off, but you can replace them if this goes it will rip a big hole in the fabric.)

Honest reviews on Columbia Men's Silver Ridge Short

These are truly lightweight shorts. I bought my first pair to see if they fit and if they were of acceptable quality. I'm a thin guy, and these shorts work well with my slim frame. They are don't add much to my pack weight so I actually took two varieties of them. This is almost unheard of in my 'mean and lean' packing philosophy but I'm willing to look the other way in this instance. I recommend them highly.
