The Marmot Vertical Soft Shell Jacket is a great jacket in many ways, but fails in one way which is why I returned it.

It has excellent material thickness and design. It is superior to many jackets in its design. Great length. Sizing is excellent. It permits layers without discomfort. Form followed function nicely.

But the down side and it is seen in some other jackets. The collar is all but a waste. You can leave it very open and hence have a very exposed neck; or you can zip it to the top which is very uncomfortable (not useable). The collar should be an inch shorter in the front, and more flexible. That would make this a perfect jacket. Many soft shell jackets get it right. This one is not useable.

I would love to see that one improvement. But I guess that does not help me here.

The Vertical Jacket made by Marmot is by far the best value for the money. I have looked at comparable jackets for the price but the Marmot brand stands out in durability and quality of construction. Hands down...my first choice for outdoor gear!

Best Deals for Marmot Men's Vertical Jacket

This jacket is very nicely made and fits true to size. It includes a removable hood and powder skirt, both of which are useful. With just a t-shirt under the jacket, It's comfortable walking around town when it's 35-60F. Any colder, I usually layer with a light wool/cotton sweater. It is also a great windbreaker. I can't speak too much about the water resistant properties yet.

I have yet to try this while skiing. I imagine it'll be comfortable without too much layering, especially when doing the activities. Might be a little cold on the lifts.

This jacket is excellent. It's very light but yet surprisingly warm for its weight. The construction is very solid and the jacket is extremely comfortable. I live in Wisconsin and find it perfect for most winter uses. For skiing or other vigorous activities it's plenty warm for hours outdoors. It's also perfect for most daily activities when you're not actually sitting outside for extended periods of time. I hate having a huge warm jacket most of the time because as soon as I get to the store or wherever I'm going it's too warm and I have to carry a huge jacket around. This is perfect!
