With the particular one the zip extends the temperature range. Zip it up when you need the extra warmth of the turtleneck and bring it down when you don't. Really made skiing more comfortable.
Also works just as a shirt around the house in winter, we keep it a bit cool and this provides just the right amount of warmth.
More durable than I would have thought, have used it for more than 70 ski days and even more as just a short and no wear signs yet

This is an excellent primary layer. It breathes well and keeps you warm. It is mid to heavy weight and works well with fleece over layers. It doesn't get static-y. Durability has been excellent so far with no signs of wear.I would recommend it over the "___armor" brand. It maybe wool but there is no itching!
At full price it is as pricey as the competition but you can get a good deal on it off season.

I just picked this up yesterday and wore it today on a 9 mile hike in Tinahely, Ireland. It was chilly and Very windy for a lot of the trip. This shirt was my only layer except for the times when it was crazy windy. It does a great job wicking and breathing. I would normally buy L shirts, I chose the XL to fit a little more comfortable. This top is awesome as a base layer. However, it is SKIN TIGHT. It fits like the Nike Pro Combat stuff. I've worn this on many a run below freezing and it, by itself, has been great in keeping me warm.
